Boxing Showdown

This end of year project required us to create our own brief and create any solution to a problem we wanted. For this project, I chose the issue of the misconceptions of boxing, and how there is actually a lot of skill that goes into the sport. The solution for this was to create a 2-player, strategy card game that uses the gameplay to educate players on the different moves used in the sport. The visual aesthetic is a homage to 90s retro arcade games, with dynamic pixel art spread across all cards. This project concluded with a full production of the cards, packaging and rulebook.

Project type: Solo                       Duration: 14 Weeks                    Medium: Tabletop Gaming

A throwback to the 90s

The logo for Boxing Showdown is a homage to the old ‘red vs blue’ gameplay systems of retro arcade games. It’s towering visual aestetic is inspired by the early 1990s game titles like Super Metroid. It ensures the players are transported into this world as soon as they look at the box.

The heart of the game

The cards for the game use the pixel art style to present a dynamic, engaging experience. The gameplay is built around players managing their stamina and chancing cards by rolling dice. The cards are built around real moves used in the sport as an educational factor.

A packaging to immerse you

The packaging for Boxing Showdown immediately transports the player into the world of the game. The towering logo is front and center with the classic ‘red vs blue’ dynamic present.

The back of the packaging shows 4 easy steps to help the players get into the game easily, with all the critical information about game time and player count also present on the box.

How you score points

The game tokens are the way that players keep track of how they are going in a match. The tokens are built around being easy to keep track of, with numbers on the back to represent the point values. The tokens are also how players manage their stamina.

A rulebook to master

Boxing Showdowns rulebook is built around being easy to understand. It identifies key aspects of the game, with icons and images to ensure the players can jump into the game very quickly.
